Landscape Painting Workshop

$550.00

About the Workshop

June 5–7, 2026 · New Salem, MA

This three-day plein air workshop focuses on painting the landscape from direct observation. Working across some of Western Massachusetts's most compelling outdoor locations, students will develop gestural seeing — learning to read light, atmosphere, and the character of a scene quickly and truthfully. The emphasis is on freshness in paint handling, systematic color mixing, and building the kind of confident mark-making that only comes from working in front of nature with a seasoned instructor, one on one.

Each morning opens with a demonstration by Michael. Afternoons are guided painting sessions with individual critiques.

Lunch is provided all three days.

Travel and lodging are the responsibility of the student. Accommodations are not provided.

10:00 AM – 4:30 PM daily (Lunch 12:00–1:00 PM)

Bear's Den · Quabbin Overlook · NSMA Kitchen & Patio

What to Bring

A full supply list will be provided after registration.

About Michael Klein

Michael Klein is a painter working in the classical realist tradition, with a foundation built through study at the Water Street Atelier (now Grand Central Atelier) under Jacob Collins, the Art Students League under Nelson Shanks, and earlier training under Richard Whitney. His work is grounded in direct observation — painting the light, atmosphere, and quiet character of the natural world as it appears in front of him. He is the founder of Pochade Palette, a handcrafted plein air palette made for painters who work from life, and the director of the New Salem Museum and Academy.
